I think the slow awakening of spring is the prettiest time of year in Portland. The cherry trees are the first things to bloom, followed shortly by the rhododendrons and azaleas. So after months of gray skies, gray building, sidewalks, rivers, you see these light pink blossoms start blooming on trees all over town. It’s like one of those black and white commercials where only one thing is done in color. It’s awesome. Today I noticed that there were small buds on the trees outside. I can’t wait for them to bloom.
Life has been quiet for me lately and most of my time is spent right here at my desk listening to online lectures and studying. This quarter has been a trying one for me at school, and I have frequently thought of quitting and moving to the country into a house with a comfy chair, a fireplace, and a roomful of books. After I stop daydreaming I pick my textbook back up and resume studying.
When I’m feeling sad about spending my days doing schoolwork, Jake tells me to look for the small things that I can take pleasure in. He says he likes listening to talk radio while riding his bike home, doing crossword puzzles with me, and getting breakfast at our local coffee shop on the weekends. Today I decided that I like the thought of the pink trees and spring coming. Some days spring is the best you can hope for.
